Tour of Two Rivers
One of our Albury based athletes raced well in the Tour of Two Rivers. Here is his report of the final stage.
Stage 5 of the tour of two rivers – Bell Bridge. Report written by Liam McAlister.
Going into the stage I was tied for 1st in the King Of The Mountain classification and sitting in 6th on general classification so my main goal was to try and win the KOM. The race was over a hilly 60km course with three climbs, the last a 2km climb to the finish. As we rolled off the line my teammate attacked and held a break for the first 6km while I sat in the peloton preparing for the KOM sprint. After he was dragged back by the peloton we controlled the race making sure no one who was in the points could get away before the climb and take the points away. In the KOM sprint I attacked at the bottom of the climb with another U17 junior but one of the senior riders was too strong and finished over the top of us. I was able to hold on for second which was enough to win the overall KOM for the series.
After the sprint we attacked every opportunity we could take to try and lessen the numbers coming into the final climb. As we came up to the last climb with 2km until the finish, we drove the race and broke away with just the one guy who won the KOM sprint holding on. With 500m to go it was just me and the KOM winner going head to head but with 300m to go he surged really hard and I just couldn’t hold the pace and had to settle back in but still was able to finish 2nd on the stage.
