Emily Dunk – Latest update

One of our young athletes, Emily Dunk, was involved in a crash yesterday in Castlemaine, during the Junior Criterium Championships.

She slid into a gutter and sustained injuries to her head and body.  She was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital. The doctors at the hospital did CT scans on her head, which thankfully did not show any damage to her brain.

She had surgery last night to repair a deep gash above her eye.  She has broken her left collarbone and displaced her right collarbone.  She also badly bruised her knee which is still quite swollen.  As of 2pm (11 April), she is out of ICU and recovering in a ward on Level 8 at Royal Children’s hospital.

Latest Update:
Emily’s memory has now returned and she is now out of hospital.

Message from Emily’s parents in response to all the lovely emails and messages of support:
Hello. I thought I might [write] to say thankyou for your thoughts and well wished for our daughter Emily. I don’t have everyones numbers nor emails, so if someone asks, please say she is sore battered and bruised but she’s doing well.
She woke up this morning quite bright and chatty, as if she’s climbed her personal mountain and has just peeked over the top.
For those of you who know and have ridden with Em, you might know that she really loves descending and can be quite fearless. She knows she can make up places and lost time and can put herself right for the charge to the finish line.
The doctors say she looks like she’s ready for that ride. It might be a longer descent than normal and will have some hairpins, false flats and a couple of climbs to challenge her, but I think she’s heading off on that ride! (she’s already discussing the colour requirements of her new bike!!)

All our thoughts are with Emily as she recovers from this accident.  We are also thinking of her parents, Robin and Fiona and Em’s little sister, Katie.

Special thanks to Peter Verleys-Donk for driving Robin to the Royal Children’s hospital, to Sonia  Throssell who helped at the accident scene, to John Throssell who took care of Katie Dunk after the accident, and to all the other paramedics who were involved.
We will keep you updated on how Emily is progressing.

For any well wishes to Emily, you can either comment on our website or email me (helen@kellycycling.com.au) and I will forward your email to Robin.
