CCCC Road Champs

Drew Morey had a great ride at the CCCC Road Champs last weekend, winning his U15 division.  Here is Drew’s race report about how the race unfolded:

Club and Regional Champs
The race was held a Modella on the 4th of September 2010. The U15’s and the U17’s started together. There were seven U15’s and three U17’s. During the first 10km’s the race was slow and controlled. But I knew that once we turned the corner there would be a tailwind, so there were going to be attacks from the stronger riders.

I warmed up well by doing three, two minute time trial efforts, to ensure I would not start with cold legs and get dropped early in the race.

Once we turned the corner there were attacks as I had predicted, two of the under 17’s attacked and formed a split in the bunch. This front group consisted of me, John Cochrane and the three under 17’s. John and I worked turns with the others to get us away as far away as possible from the other under 15’s. After about 5-8km’s John dropped back to the other bunch behind us, leaving me the only under 15 left in the leading group of under 17’s.

At the first hill on the course, I got dropped by the under 17’s, leaving me with half the course to ride solo, with a large gap on all the other chasing under 15’s. Throughout the second half of the course I was nervous hoping I wouldn’t get caught, having used all my energy in this move.
When there was 5km’s to go and nobody in sight I was pretty sure I would win.

Well done Drew.  It shows how diligent and consistent training has helped Drew improve over the past 12 months.

Hayden Eynaud also had a great ride, finishing 2nd in the U17 Men’s race.  He has been on the podium consistently this winter and it won’t be long before the handicappers decide to bump him up a grade.

Emily Dunk raced against the U13 boys and did a great job setting pace up the climb.  After being off the bike all week with a flu and fever, she did well to match it against the boys.
