Next KCC Camp

The riders learning the yoga 'down dog' pose

The next KCC cycling camp will be held in Bright during the last week of September.  This week coincides with the first week of the September school holidays for Victorians.

The camp will be structured to allow those studying to have quiet block of study time each afternoon (or as needed), whilst still getting all the benefits of training in a team each day.  The same applies for athletes that need to work remotely.  Time will be set aside each day to attend to work needs.

The camp is structured so younger rides will do 4 days of riding, core strength sessions, lectures, stretching, etc whilst senior athletes are offered the full 6 day camp.  (Senior athletes can attend the shorter camp only as required).

Camp dates to put in your diary:

Arrival: Sunday 23rd September - 12.30-1pm (check in and lunch).

Skills session and ride planned: 2.30-4.30pm

Departure: (U17 riders) Wed 26th Sept (approx 3pm). 4 day camp.

(Masters, U19, U23 and elite riders) Friday 29th Sept (approx 1.30pm). 6 day camp.

Athletes listen to a lecture

Camp forms to secure a place to attend this camp will be sent out in August, along with detailed information about what to bring, etc.

Trent Morey – Tour of Borneo

Trent during the Tour of Borneo

Kelly Cycle Coaching athlete, Trent Morey did his first block of international racing with Plan B cycling team during April-May 2012.

Trent flew to Malaysia and competed in the Tour of Borneo. This race consisted of 5 stages over 760km.

The 4th stage was by far the toughest covering 214km.

Borneo was a tour for the climbers

Trent found himself in a break on the final day with team mate, Luke Joyce.  On this final stage, Luke finished on the podium in 2nd place, whilst Trent came in 5th.  A great result Trent to get into a break and get a top 10 result.

Tour of Azerbaijan

After a week of recovery in Malaysia, Plan B flew to Iran, to compete in the Tour of Azerbaijan.  This 6 stage race covered over 920km.

Trent raced well for stages 1 to 4, finishing in the bunch kick on Stage 4.  On Stage 5, Trent blew up on the climb and was unable to finish within the time limit.  Well done Trent on your first international racing experience.

Ararat Junior Tour

U17 Mens A grade sprint finish

Kelly Cycle Coaching had two athletes opt to race in the Ararat Junior tour instead of at Phillip Island last weekend.

Drew Morey and Angus Lyons competed in the U17 A grade event.

Both Gus and Drew did well in the time trial, finishing 8th and 10th, respectively.  They were only 34sec and 41sec slower than the winner’s time over the 10km course.  The field included several interstate riders from South Australia and New South Wales so it was a strong field.  Angus recently won the 2012 Australian Hill Climbing Time Trial Championships.  Drew has been getting progressively getting stronger in time trialling and climbing in general.  Drew can often be found hchasing his elder brother’s wheel, Trent Morey (Plan B), up in the Dandenongs.

The next junior tour will be held in Shepparaton in mid June.

Both Gus and Drew narrowly avoided a few crashes in both road events.  Here is a photo of the sprint finish on Day 2.

Phillip Island Grand Prix

Michael Hale - in action

Kelly Cycle Coaching had a big group of athletes brave the cold and wintery conditions on the Phillip Island GP circuit last weekend. Athletes were subject to rain, wind, more rain and more wind throughout the day.

Michael Hale - in action

In the elite mens race, 36 riders finished out of a field of 181 combined Mens A and B grade.

In our CharterMason team, Michael Hale won the B grade event, and also finished 17th overall.  Liam White suffered some bad luck with a puncture and then getting rammed by another cyclist who seemed to have difficulty keeping his bike straight.  With two buckled wheels and bruised ribs, Liam limped back to the pits and switched to a team mates bike to finish the race in the front group with Michale Hale.  Thanks Hayden for lending Liam your bike.  Markie Kelly raced well to finish his first Grand Prix in 9th position, in B Grade, (representing Fitzroy Cycles).

Click here for the Mens results.

Carley McKay (Holden Cycling Team) raced in the women’s event.  After recently returning from her first Interstate event, Carley used this event as a training race, chasing the early breaks and riding hard in the windy conditions.

In the afternoon, CCCC held graded club racing.

The following riders earned podium finishes:

  • Jayden Cooper – 3rd C Grade

Other riders who competed on the day include: Steve Carroll, Ben Andrews, Ben Lee, Pierce Connor, Ash Gillespie, Nick White (who got blown completely off the course twice), Camden Bush, Hayden Eynaud, Scott Walkerden, Aaron Blomeley, Bryce Morey, James Cummings, and Sean McIver.

Ash wins his first race

Ash racing

Kelly Cycle Coaching has been coaching Ashley since October 2010.  A few weeks ago, Ash won a club race in Geelong.  We caught up with Ash and asked him about his training and his first victory.

How long have we been coaching you?

I joined the Kelly cycling program in October 2010

What is your favourite session you like to do on the trainer?

I like all of the different type of ergo sessions (AT, spinning efforts, race pace efforts and  strength endurance efforts) because they push me  to the of my best of abilities.

What is your favourite place to ride in Geelong?

My favourite place to ride in Geelong is down to Anglesea and back home via Bells Beach. The view is nice and the hills are challenging- short sharp climbs. Reaching the the tops of each climb feels great. With very little traffic around i can practise my descending skill as well and build my confidence.

What is the steepest hill you have had to do in training?

Chalambra Crescent (the world championship course) is the steepest hill that I train on.

What things have you learnt since joining Kelly Cycle Coaching?

I have learnt many cycling  skills  from Kelly coaching such as cornering , riding rollers , how to train properly, riding in a bunch ,training in heart rate zones, covering attacks, how to clean my bike properly and  a whole lot more. Some more skills which I am trying to learn are riding high cadence efforts on the rollers,  riding no hands on the rollers and track stands and also mechanical elements of the bike .  I could not learn these skills without Bob and Helen’s help and guidance.

Ash racing

We understand you did a club race last weekend and won.  Congratulations Ash.  Can you tell us what race you did and what happened in the race?

Last week I raced at Meredith.  It was a  40 km race for the  juniors (only three of us U17’s) which was combined with the 65km senior handicap race. I was riding off limit with one other U17 and about 6-8 senior riders. We rode out 8 km to the main circuit from Meredith.  Our bunch worked well together doing pretty good rolling turns (not always perfect) and we were able to stay away for 1 lap.  Just as we started our second and final lap (for the juniors) the second limit bunch caught us. Me and the other U17 rider were able to jump in with this 2nd limit bunch. With our restricted junior gearing we struggled to stay on the back with the seniors.  We managed to get most of the way around the course before getting dropped.  I was able to ride away from the other U17 rider for the win.

Who is your favourite pro cyclist in Europe?  Why do you admire him?

My favourite pro riders is Robbie McEwan because I have my photo taken with and signed by him on the mantel piece at home. Also i like Cadell Evens. Why I admire these pro riders is because they never give into pain and always put in 100% effort into their racers or training rides

What is your favourite subject at school?

My  favourite subjects at school are PE, History and Chinese. PE i like so much because I am doing physical exercise and not sitting at a desk the whole time. I like history because i learn about the past  civilizations and their customs, rules and beliefs. Chinese I like because i find it challenging and learning a new language is not easy.I want to go to China with the school trip in 2013.

Do you know what you want to be when you finish school?

My ambition after I leave school is to go as far as my cycling will take me or be involved with cycling some how, or use my Chinese to get a job over in China.

Thanks for answering these questions for us Ash and good luck with your cycling and studies.
